What to Do If Your Identity is Stolen

Steps to take if your identity has been stolen:
  • Go to IdentityTheft.gov to report the theft and create a recovery plan.
  • Contact your credit union or bank to notify them that your identity was stolen.
  • Close your bank accounts and open new ones.
  • Contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert.
  • Contact your local police department and file a criminal report.
  • Alert the passport office to prevent anyone from applying for a passport in your name.
  • Document the names and phone numbers of everyone you speak to regarding the incident.
