Identity Theft
In today’s high tech world, safeguarding our identity is more important than ever. Red Canoe Credit Union is serious about the protection of your personal information. We’ll be implementing some operational changes to further protect your identity. Here are some changes you’ll notice after October 1, 2008:
- Over the counter receipts no longer show your address for shared branching
transactions.
- Your entire account number is no longer on receipts or statements.
- We no longer request your entire social security number as identification.
- When changing your address over the phone, additional questions are asked to verify your identity.
There are additional steps you can take to safeguard your personal information. Here are some additional prevention tips, as well as steps to take if you are a victim of identity theft.
Prevention tips
- Keep your personal information safe. Don’t leave financial information where others can view it, either at home or at work.
- Shred/burn documents, especially financial statements, credit applications or credit card convenience checks.
- Take your mail to the post office or collection boxes.
- Do not give out personal information by phone or email. Remember that the credit union will never ask for this through email. Be wary of anyone asking to “verify” information through these channels.
- Do not carry anything with your Social Security number on it.
- Do not open emails if you don’t know who sent it (especially with attachments).
- Check all billing statements for accuracy.
- Review your credit report(s) at least once a year.
